Frequently asked questions
Why is the assessment being done?
We are carrying out a retrofit assessment to understand how your home could be improved to make it warmer, more energy-efficient and more comfortable. This is part of a government-backed scheme to improve homes and help reduce energy bills in the future.
Who will be coming to my home and are they safe?
A qualified Retrofit Assessor will visit your home. They are fully security checked and trained to work in homes like yours. You’ll be informed of their name and provided with photo ID details before they enter your property. All staff follow strict health and safety and safeguarding procedures.
How long will the visit take?
The assessment usually takes 1 to 2 hours depending on the size of the property. The assessor will inform you if more time is needed.
What will they do during the assessment?
– the assessor will:
– take room measurements, including walls, windows and doors
– ask about how you use heating and hot water
– take photos of the property (not of you, or other people or personal items)
– check insulation and ventilation levels
They will not move belongings or look in cupboards without your permission.
Do I need to do anything to prepare?
Please ensure all rooms, including the loft if accessible, are available for inspection. You don’t need to move anything or unplug appliances. If help is needed, we can arrange support.
Will any work start on the day?
No. This visit is just to assess your home. If any upgrades are agreed afterwards, we’ll schedule a separate visit and fully explain the process.
Will I have to move out when the work is done?
Usually, you can stay in your home. If any work would be too disruptive or raise safety concerns, we’ll work with you and your support team to make suitable arrangements.
Will this cost me anything?
No. The assessment and any approved improvement works are fully funded. There will be no cost to you.
Can someone be with me during the visit?
Yes. You can have your support worker, family member, or another member of Transform staff with you during the assessment.
What kind of upgrades might be done later?
Potential upgrades may include:
wall or loft insulation
improved ventilation
new heating systems
smart controls or draught-proofing
solar panels
You will be fully informed and consulted before any work begins.
Will I lose access to heating or hot water during the assessment?
No, the assessment does not involve switching anything off. Your heating, hot water and electricity will remain on as normal throughout the visit.
Will the assessor enter every room?
Yes, to complete an accurate assessment, the assessor needs access to all rooms, including lofts, utility areas, cellars and sometimes meter cupboards. They will always ask for your permission before entering each space.
I have medical equipment at home; will this be affected?
No. The assessment is non-invasive and will not interfere with any medical or electrical equipment. Please inform us in advance so we can be especially careful around sensitive areas.
What if I have pets?
Pets are not a problem, but please let us know in advance so the assessor can take any necessary precautions. If your pet is nervous with visitors, you may wish to keep them in a separate room during the visit.
What if I don’t understand the technical information?
The assessor will explain everything in clear, plain language. If you have any questions, they will be happy to clarify and provide printed information or speak to your support worker if you prefer.
What happens after the assessment?
Once the assessment is complete, you’ll receive a summary of the findings and be contacted again if your property qualifies for upgrades. You’ll be fully briefed on what the works involve and when they might take place.
Who do I contact if I have questions after the visit?
You can contact your support worker, tenant liaison officer, housing provider or the retrofit team directly. Contact details will be provided before or during the assessment.
