The\u00a0<strong>theme of Earth Day 2024 is \u201cPlanet vs. Plastics\u201d<\/strong>. This is about fighting the big problem of plastic all over the world. The goal is to join together to make much less plastic <strong>\u2013<\/strong> 60% less by 2040.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Facts and information about plastics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Half of all plastics<\/strong> ever manufactured have been made in the last 20 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>2020<\/strong>, we generated more than <strong>500 million tonnes of plastic waste<\/strong> <strong>\u2013<\/strong> 900% more than in 1980<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>40%<\/strong>of the plastics produced yearly are <strong>single-use plastics<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Every year<\/strong>, about <strong>eight million tonnes of plastic waste<\/strong> escape into the <strong>oceans <\/strong>from coastal nations. That\u2019s the equivalent of setting five bin bags full of rubbish on every foot of coastline around the world.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It takes up to <strong>400 years to break down<\/strong> plastics and their additives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Microplastics <\/strong>have become a new <strong>health hazard<\/strong>, as they have been found in <strong>public<\/strong> <strong>drinking water<\/strong> systems and drifting through the <strong>air<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each year <strong>100,000 animals in the sea are killed by plastic<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What has Transform done to reduce plastic waste?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Every office has its own cups and mugs to avoid consuming single-use plastics such as bottles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We have arranged for all our offices to have recycling bins by May 2024.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We also have provided all our offices with stainless steel cutlery to replace single-use plastic cutlery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our offices are also equipped with Microwaves and plates to encourage us to bring our own lunch to work, which also reduces plastic from packaging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What changes can you make to reduce plastic waste?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wrapping up your sandwiches?<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Instead of using cling film which is not recyclable, use foil or reusable beeswax wraps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fancy a cuppa?&nbsp;<\/strong><br>Make sure you use teabags that don&#8217;t contain plastic or perhaps use loose leaf tea and a tea strainer!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Need fresh breath after lunch?<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Conventional chewing gum is made from plastic (yes really!) so look out for plastic free alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Call Ernie!<\/strong><br>He drove the fastest milk cart in the west apparently\u2026 More and more people are going old school and having their milk delivered in glass bottles.&nbsp;Milk floats are even electric to reduce CO2 emissions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How can you re-use plastic?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s lot&#8217;s of crafty ideas for re-using your plastics <strong>\u2013<\/strong> who remembers their dad&#8217;s Vitalite tubs full of screws?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Small changes make all the difference<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are lots of small changes you can make to reduce plastic in your life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Buy <strong>tomato sauce or mayonnaise in a glass jar<\/strong> rather than a plastic squeezy bottle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pick <strong>loose fruit and veg <\/strong>and take your own reusable bag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not all plastics can be recycled \u2018kerb side\u2019, so why not use one of your \u2018bags for life&#8217;, save up all those other things, and take them with you to the supermarket to be recycled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid buying bottled water and buy your own reusable water bottle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carry a reusable coffee cup that you can have filled at the coffee shop, that saves on the plastic disposable lids and can sometimes come with a discount!\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Happy World Earth Day 2024!
